Deep and fluidly carved in sandstone, the circular body seemingly derived from Indian architectural motifs, with entwined leaves to the top; the base section with three 'stupa' form motifs. Some old damage and a uniform weathered patina.

English, circa 1800

Provenance - Private collection, Gloucestershire

This beguiling architectural element, lacking any provenance, must fall into the seam of influence bought back to the United Kingdom by Thomas & William Daniells and Thomas Hodges; artists who travelled extensively in India during the late 1700's.

The carved circular motif if almost directly modelled on the carvings found at the Adalaj Stepwell in Gujerat (see the accompanying photographs).
