Junko Kitamura

Biography

A highly respected contemporary Japanese ceramic artist celebrated for her intricate hand-built vessels and deeply tactile surfaces. Working primarily in stoneware, she creates sculptural forms characterised by dense, rhythmic textures inspired by weaving, basketry, and natural growth patterns. Her work combines extraordinary technical precision with a quiet, meditative quality rooted in Japanese craft traditions. Rather than using the wheel, Kitamura painstakingly constructs each piece by hand, often applying thousands of tiny coils or impressions to create richly layered surfaces. Her ceramics are held in major international collections and are admired for their balance of restraint, complexity, and material sensitivity.
