With mahogany cabriole legs of bold and handsome proportions, and charming centrally carved rose motif to the front and side stretchers. All traditionally upholstered in linen, the seat of shallow and useful depth

Northern European, early 19th Century

Provenance:
Kilberry Castle, Argyll, Scotland

The original castle was built in 1497 but was destroyed by an English pirate in 1513. Owned throughout its life by the Campbell clan the castle was restored and wrapped into the present mansion by John Campbell in 1844, and again enlarged in 1871. The sofas could possibly have been purchased to fill the newly rebuilt and decorated mansion house at that time.
