Hanging bookcase. Lacquered wood.

Made by Azucena in Milan in the 1970s

Caccia Dominioni always approached furniture design from an architect's perspective. In the typically understated, neutral, and stone-heavy interiors of upper-class Milanese apartments, a fiery red hanging object served as a stark graphic counterpoint. It anchored the room, drawing the eye to the vertical spatial lines and classical arches of the shelving unit.

The choice of vibrant red high-gloss lacquer serves both a philosophical purpose and a deliberate architectural purpose. Luigi Caccia Dominioni famously explained his choice of colour by stating, "For the same reason I use red or brown plaster, the colours of natural soils." To him, this specific shade was not a synthetic, loud pop-art colour, but rather an extraction of natural Lombard tones, reminiscent of regional terracotta, ancient bricks, and dark red soils.
In postwar Milan high-gloss lacquering was highly prized. It combined old-world, bourgeois craftsmanship with modern technical innovation. Coating a traditional material like wood in uniform crimson lacquer masked the grain, transforming the bookcase into a sleek, monolithic object.
