Art Deco Drinks Trolley
£12,000
Tubular tow-tier metal frame in pastel mint enamel finish, with chrome trim and red bakelite handle knob
France, circa 1930
The red ball-shaped knob gives the appearance of a later 1950s 'atomic' design but the trolley is very much of the 1930s. Tubular steel was beginning to dominate design production and machine-bent loops, as seen on the wheel legs, is a feature of this period, a technique popularised by the Bauhaus. The pastel mint colouring also suggests the popular 'Eau de Nil' (Water of the Nile) green of the 1930s, a fashion that married soft organic hues with machine age materials
