Product Description
Burr Holly square frame with inlaid bog oak and boxwood parquetry decoration. Of exceptional finish and original condition

England, circa 1930

Holly's hardness and numerous knots makes it a difficult wood to work with, especially by hand, and was often only used in detailing or inlay. Blessed with an extremely fine grain and palest of colour, it can be easily stained, so much so that it was once called 'dye wood.'

Being both indigenous and full of visual character, coupled with its rarity of use as case-wood, would have appealed to the Arts & Crafts sensibility and wood-working skill of Gimson. Usually small in scale with decorative inlay, similar mirrors are exist which are attributed to his workshop, though never signed in the Arts & Crafts manner
