The late 19th century saw a resurgence in interest in the early Louis XVI style. Wealthy members of society and the newly made industrialist began to decorate their homes in the earlier historic styles such as the Gothic revival, Renaissance revival, Louis XVI and Chippendale revival styles. Mirrors such as this were created to mimic the works of the past but were made larger in scale and often gently embellished to make them grander than their original designs. As mirror technology technology improved so the older mouth blown glass was replaced by far larger poured glass plates allowing for the increase in scale and therefore richness in form.
