Product Description
An early 19th-century marble bench with a rectangular top of softened edges, resting on two lion monopodia. The frieze between them is carved with a stylised palmette.

Although weathered from years outdoors, this bench is a striking expression of the classical design language championed by Thomas Hope. His work fused ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs into bold yet refined furniture and decorative arts that came to define the Regency style.

While this bench cannot be directly attributed to Hope himself, it was almost certainly created with knowledge of his influential publication, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807), which was widely circulated and highly regarded at the time.

The lion monopodium was a favoured motif in Hope's furniture, drawing inspiration from numerous Roman precedents. Notably, a drawing by Hope from around 1798 depicts a throne from Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome, featuring similar classical features.
