The ancient curule form with X-shaped supports was inspired by the Ancient Grecian klismos chair or stool. Sella curulis or curule, supposedly from currus, "chariot") was the seat upon which Roman magistrates holding imperium were entitled to sit and thus aspiring gentlemen could imagine themselves as heroes from a classical past.
