Lalique René

Biography

Born in 1860 in rural Ay, France. At the age of sixteen he started an apprenticeship with the Paris jeweller Louis Aucoc. Lalique spent most of his time in Paris, but often retreated to the countryside for inspiration. Lalique studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs while completing his apprenticeship. He then studied at Sydenham College outside of London. Lalique returned to Paris in 1880 where he experimented with enamel, cast and enamelled glass elements. Throughout the 1920s Lalique created a variety of pieces out of glass, including cachets, vases, ashtrays and everyday objects.
