Product Description
An unusually long and robustly Estate made mahogany hall bench with chamfered back rail supported on five uprights over solid mahogany seat on ten columned legs with stepped toes on the front.

England, circa 1825

Mahogany hall furniture was much in demand in this period. Central to every large town and country house was the entrance hall where hall beches such as this, or hall chairs were placed. Whilst often decorative, perhaps embellished with a painted family coat of arms or crest they were designed to be functional, uncomfortable and easily cleanable. The hall was a waiting room where tradesmen or visitors would wait to be called into the house. Often, particularly in the winter months, they would arrive my carriage or horse and be dirty from their journey. Such pieces of furniture were on hand to be used and not worried about whilst also to no small degree showing off the wealth and good taste of the family.
