Holophane
Biography
Holophane were pioneers of prismatic glass lighting from the late 19th century onward, developing their signature 'Reflector-Refractor' system to control and soften light with remarkable efficiency. By the 1920s their fittings were widely used in industrial, civic, and ecclesiastical settings, prized for both performance and durability
They developed a unique design known as the 'Blondel Flute.' Molded glass globe covered in horizontal and vertical prisms. They named their invention 'Holophane,' derived from the Greek words holos (meaning whole or entire) and phainein (to appear or shine). The goal was to create a light fixture that was luminous across its entire surface
