Large Art Nouveau Chandelier

by W.A.S. Benson
£21,000

Conical opalescent glass shade beneath glass canopy, with brass and copper frame and fittings

England, circa 1900

Fundamentally an Arts & Crafts designer, much of Benson's graceful, organic lighting, such as this chandelier, deeply overlap with the nature-inspired aesthetics of the Art Nouveau. Benson, unlike many of his peers, also unashamedly embraced machine-made production and late Victorian, Edwardian modern engineering methods. These designs were so influential that in 1895, Siegfried Bing chose to display Benson's work at his famous, eponymous gallery, Maison de l'Art Nouveau in Paris
