Product Description
Attributed to Paolo Portaluppi
A set of four highly unusual painted and gilded cast iron console tables in the neo-classical manner with inset rosso levanto marble tops over classical frieze on scrolled legs terminating in upturned toe
Italy, circa 1950
Provenance:
La Scala opera house, Milan
As to how the consoles left La Scala it seems likey that they were removed during one of the periodic demolitions and renovations. In 1955 the Piccola Scala (small Scala) was built, on the site of the old theatre, to a design by celebrated Milanese architect Paolo Portaluppi along with the engineer Marcello Zavellini Rossi. This small and beautiful 600 seat theatre (complete with boxes and stalls) was designed to host intimate opera performances, experimental theatre and music, rehearsals and other events. In 1983 the space was closed and subsequently used as a ticket office. In 2002 what was left of the Piccola Scala was demolished.
