Product Description
With undulating but linear, carved surface glazed in a soft celadon blue. With original Tomobako (wooden storage box) signed to base
Japan, late 20th Century
Ōno Kōtarō's signature carving technique is known as shinogi, a traditional Japanese approach where the surface of a ceramic vessel is rhythmically carved to create ridges or flutes. After wheel-throwing and partial drying, Ono carefully carves deep, sweeping grooves or rib-like flutes into the surface.
Unlike rigid, symmetrical shinogi seen in more traditional wares, Ōno's carving has much more fluid asymmetry, giving each piece a sense of natural growth or movement.
His celadon glazes pool in the carved grooves, enhancing depth and creating luminous tonal variations. The ridges aren't just decoration; they define the vessel's form, catching light and shadow in a sculptural way.
